Lover’s Leap is a famous site, found in the vicinity of the Koneswaram Kovil in Trincomalee. Lover’s Leap can be spotted before entering the temple. There is a sad story behind the mysterious beauty of the rock. The legendary story about Lover’s Leap revolves around a beautiful lady who jumped off this rock, being unable to cope up with the grief of losing her lover.
The inscriptions on the rock tells the traumatic story of Francina van Reed, the child of a Dutch civil officer. Francina was engaged to a young Dutch military officer. But her fiancé broke their engagement when his foreign service in the island ended and left for Europe. Heartbroken, Francina is believed to have thrown herself into the sea from the rock now known as Lover’s Leap as her fiancé’s ship sailed on in the distance.
