Sri Maha Bodhi
Standing tall in the middle of Anuradhapura, Maha Meuna Uyana, Sri Maha Bodhi is said to be the right-wing branch (southern branch) from the historical Sri Maha Bodhi at Buddha Gaya.
Sri Maha Bodhi was planted in 249 (2268 years ago) BC and was brought to Sri Lanka by Theri Sangamitta, the daughter of Emperor Asoka. The Bodhi tree was originated from the very tree in Buddhagaya under which Buddha attained enlightenment 2600 years ago, making Sri Maha Bodhi the oldest living tree in documented history of the world.
Every Buddhist is said to have visited and paid homage to this sacred Bodhi tree at least once in their lives.
Things to consider
Since this is considered one of most sacred places for Buddhists all over the world, there are few house rules to follow when you visit Sri Maha Bodhi for locals and foreigners alike. Such as wearing decent clothes that cover from shoulders to below knee level, wear clothes that does not have dark shades and bright colours (white is the best), as a respect you’re also required to remove hats, shoes and sunglasses and finally calm, collective and respectful behaviour is also appreciated.
